Child abuse, Neglect, Trauma indicators, Developmental stages, Preventive actions, Intervention methods, Abuse detection scale
The session "How to Prevent Abuse and Its Effects on Children" emphasizes that both child abuse and neglect constitute maltreatment, which has harmful consequences on a child's physical and psychological development. Abuse is an act of violence against children, exploiting the physical, psychological, or economic power imbalance between adults and children, intentionally causing harm to their physical or mental well-being.
In the first part of the session, parents will discuss the meaning of neglect and abuse and identify the main forms of abuse that can hinder a child’s healthy development. Understanding a child’s needs according to their developmental stages, by parents and other adults they interact with, enables healthy relationships and the identification of trauma indicators, facilitating preventive and therapeutic actions. In the second part of the session, participants will explore theoretical elements that increase awareness of the effects of abuse on a child’s development and intervention methods in cases of suspected neglect or abuse. At the end of the session, the parental educator will ask parents to consult the Parent's Guide on the page containing the Abuse and Trauma Detection Scale. Before the next session, parents are encouraged to complete this exercise to identify key elements for evaluating abuse and neglect situations.
This module is part of the materials dedicated to the training of parental educators.
This module was conducted within the project “Social inclusion through the provision of integrated services at the community level – Parenting education component” implemented by the HoltIS with the support of the UNICEF in Romania.
